Place Value: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones: what children learn

Second graders learn that a three-digit number is made of hundreds, tens, and ones, and that the place of a digit tells its value. Building numbers from these parts is the base for adding, subtracting, and comparing within 1,000.

Place Value: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones: worked example

2 hundreds + 4 tens + 7 ones = 247

2 hundreds is 200, 4 tens is 40, and 7 ones is 7. 200 + 40 + 7 = 247.

Place Value: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often leave out the zero placeholder, writing 3 hundreds, 0 tens, and 5 ones as 35 instead of 305.

Place Value: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones: how to help at home or in class

Label three paper cups Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. Roll a die and drop that many craft sticks into a cup, letting each stick stand for 100, 10, or 1 depending on the cup. Leave one cup empty on purpose now and then, then have your child write the whole number. Once your child writes numbers like 4 hundreds, 0 tens, 6 ones correctly without counting sticks one by one, move on to finding a missing part.
