Have your child make up an add story about real life, such as books in two backpacks. Solve it on an open number line by splitting the second number: 48 + 25 becomes 48 + 20 = 68, then 68 + 5 = 73. Draw the hops together. Ask first whether the group grew. When your child can say why the answer must be bigger, try subtraction stories.
