Subtraction Word Problems (Within 100): what children learn

These stories cover take-from and take-apart situations within 100, such as items given away, birds that fly off, or "the rest are blue". Children subtract to find what is left.

Subtraction Word Problems (Within 100): worked example

Liam has 64 stickers. Liam gives away 28 stickers. How many stickers does Liam have left? 36

Giving stickers away takes them away. 64 - 28 = 36, so Liam has 36 stickers left.

Subtraction Word Problems (Within 100): a common mistake to watch for

Some children add the two numbers they see, so it helps to ask whether the group got bigger or smaller.

Subtraction Word Problems (Within 100): how to help at home or in class

Try the hidden-cup game. Count out 50 blocks, then secretly hide some under a cup while leaving 23 visible. Your child works out how many are hiding: 50 - 23 = 27. Lift the cup to check. Switch roles and let your child hide blocks for you. When your child sees that subtracting finds the part that is hidden or gone, mixed add and subtract stories are next.
